Would you like to see into the future? Well, here’s your chance. Come join us in the Epicurean Theatre as Bruce Russell, National Brand Ambassador for Russell’s Reserve and Wild Turkey, walks us through select expressions of award-winning whiskeys. This is a special opportunity to hear Bruce’s stories of what it is like to work side by side with two Great Master Distiller’s who happen to be his Grandfather and Father, Jimmy and Eddie Russell.
About the Speaker
Bruce Russell joins his father and grandfather as the third generation to work with the Wild Turkey Distillery, makers of Russell’s Family Reserve.
Growing up in the shadow of the distillery and his larger than life lineage it was practically inevitable that Bruce would join the family business. Following graduation from the University of Kentucky in 2014, Bruce worked as an apprentice, learning from the world’s only active father-son Master Distillers, first as a tour guide and working his way up to Brand Ambassador. Bruce is getting a taste of what Eddie and Jimmy already know… there are worse ways to make a living than being paid to make Bourbon.
Speaking of his new role, Bruce adds…
“I knew I’d continue to learn a lot about the ‘Jimmy’ way of making Bourbon, what I didn’t expect was how much I’d learn about my father and grandfather themselves. Anybody can google Bourbon and pick up the basics, the right mash bill, oak barrels, alligator char and just the right amount of time in the rick house. I’m learning that while making good whiskey is a science, making great Bourbon is an art.
There’s magic to what my dad and grandfather have been doing for so many years. I didn’t realize that growing up. I took a lot of what they did for granted. I’m starting to see things differently. I appreciate their commitment to doing things right for its own sake. Their obsession with quality. Their unwillingness to compromise their values. Their desire to control everything they can and their willingness to let go and leave the last bit to chance. When they open a barrel after years, it is amazing to see their excitement when they find something unexpected.
It is my hope to not just continue what they started, but to grow it as well. I want to focus on products that make them proud and also appeal to today’s bartenders and cocktail culture – higher proof, longer aged, and straight Rye whiskeys expand our appeal into new areas.
Growing up where I did, and in the family I did, I mistakenly thought that many people were like this. The truth is, they are extremely rare, rarer even than great whiskey. It is my hope and dream to one day follow in dad and Jimmy’s footsteps and become a distiller myself. Witnessing the passion and pride that they have for their Bourbon let me know that they are on to something special that I want to earn a part of.”
